This file contains configuration requirements, installation instructions, and tips to help you and your children and students have the best possible experience when using the Math Shop Deluxe CD-ROM.  If you're having trouble getting Math Shop Deluxe to run properly, chances are you will find helpful tips here.  We hope you are able to resolve any problems you might encounter quickly and enjoy seeing your kids master math!

  10. Macintosh System Requirements

  12. In order to run Math Shop Deluxe on your Macintosh computer you should make sure it has the following capabilities:
  13. * 68040 or any Power PC processor
  14. * System 7.1 or later
  15. * 4250 KB available RAM (8 MB total RAM or more)
  16. * Minimum 5 MB hard disk space available
  17. * 640 x 480 display with 256 colors
  18. * Double-Speed CD-ROM drive
  19.  
  20. Instructions for Installing Math Shop Deluxe
  21.  
  22. 1.  Insert Math Shop Deluxe into the CD-ROM drive.
  23. 2.  If the Math Shop Deluxe start-up screen appears, click Install.  If the start-up screen does not appear, double-click the Math Shop Deluxe Install icon within the Math Shop Deluxe CD-ROM window.
  24. 3.  In the Installer window, drag the Math Shop Deluxe  icon to the icon representing the hard drive onto which you want to install.

  26. Uninstalling Math Shop Deluxe

  28. To remove Math Shop Deluxe from your hard drive, drag the Scholastic's Math Shop Deluxe folder to the trash.  You may also throw away the ScholWavMath font from the Fonts folder within your System Folder, and the Math Shop Preferences file from the Preferences folder within your System Folder.

  30. Note: As part of the uninstall all of the user records and Arcade Alley Control settings will be deleted.

  32. Troubleshooting Questions & Answers

  34. If you're having problems running Math Shop Deluxe on your computer, read the following questions and answers and see if this information helps solve your problem(s).

  36. 1.  What can I do to get the best performance when running Math Shop Deluxe?
  37.  
  38. Listed below are tips for improving performance.
  39.  
  40. *  Verify that your computer meets all of the minimum requirements necessary to run Math Shop Deluxe.
  41.  
  42. *  Math Shop Deluxe will look best when the display is set to 640 x 480.  This will allow you to view Math Shop Deluxe at the largest possible size.  Graphics and animation will also display faster when you set your display to 256 colors.  To change your display resolution or the number of colors, use the Monitors Control Panel.

  44. *  Quit all, or as many other programs as possible before running Math Shop Deluxe.
  45.  
  46. *  Increase the size of your hard disk cache.  If your hard disk cache is set to a value that is too small, you will experience delays when Math Shop Deluxe uses files.  This may also cause sound to skip or stutter.  To reduce these delays, set your hard disk cache to a higher value.  To change the size of your hard disk cache, open the Memory Control Panel.  In the Memory dialog, change the setting for your Disk Cache. If your not sure what to set it to, click the Use Defaults button at the bottom of the dialog.  You will then have to restart your computer for this change to take effect.

  48. *  Turn off Virtual Memory.  If you are running with Virtual Memory on, you may experience slower performance and break ups in some of the voiceovers .  If you have enough available RAM in your computer, you should turn Virtual Memory off.  To turn Virtual Memory off, in the Apple Menu choose Control Panel and then click Memory.  In the Memory dialog, select the Off setting for Virtual Memory.  You will then have to restart your computer for this change to take effect.

  50. *  De-fragment your hard drive.  If your hard drive is full or has been in use for awhile, it may be fragmented.  A fragmented hard drive can slow performance substantially.  To de-fragment your hard drive, ask your local software reseller for recommended tools that will defragment your hard drive.

  52. *  Increasing the RAM on your computer may also imporve the overall performance of your computer.  This is a suggestion, not a requirement.
  53.  
  54. 2.  The animations in Math Shop Deluxe "skip" and playback isn't smooth.  How can I make it run more smoothly?
  55.  
  56. *  Math Shop Deluxe was optimized for a video display of 640x480 and 256 colors.   See question #1 above for instructions on how to set your display to 256 colors, and for other tips on how to improve performance overall.

  58. * If you are running Math Shop Deluxe on a computer with 8 MB total RAM you may also want to increase the amount of available memory by turning off all unnecessary system extensions and restarting your computer.  Use the Extensions Manager Control Panel to turn off extensions.  The extensions necessary for running Math Shop Deluxe are the QuickTime extensions, Sound Manager, and your CD-ROM extension (your computer may also require other extensions for additional required hardware devices).

  60. * If you are using a Centris or Quadra you should enable the processor cache on your computer.   Quit out of Math Shop Deluxe and open the cache switch control panel select the "On" or "Faster" setting and restart Math Shop Deluxe.

  62. 3.  My audio isn't working.  What should I do?
  63.  
  64. *   If you are not getting sound from your speakers or headphones, check the following:  Are all cables properly connected?  This product should produce audio through your sound card.  Make sure that the cables from your speakers or headphones are connected to your sound card, that the speakers have power, and that the volume is turned up.  Use the Sound Control Panel to adjust the volume and verify that the sound is working.

  66. *    If sound was playing and has stopped playing during the game, you may have accidently hit the mute shortcut key: Command V on the keyboard.  Try Command V again. If this does not work, you may want to quit Math Shop Deluxe and restart.

  68. 4.  I'm getting an error message telling me that I'm out of memory. What should I do?
  69.  
  70. *  If you are getting an "Out of Memory" message, the system crashes a lot, or performance is sluggish, chances are your memory resources are stretched to capacity. Try closing all other applications before starting this program.  On Power Macs, turning virtual memory on, while degrading performance, will reduce the amount of memory required to run Math Shop Deluxe.  Use the Memory Control Panel to turn on virtual memory.  You may also increase the amount of available memory by turning off all unnecessary system extensions and restarting your computer.  Use the Extensions Manager Control Panel to turn off extensions.  The extensions necessary for running Math Shop Deluxe are the QuickTime extensions, Sound Manager, and your CD-ROM extension (your computer may also require other extensions for additional required hardware devices).  To check the amount of available memory on your computer, select About This Macintosh from the Apple menu in the folder.  If problems persist, you may need to add additional memory to your system.

  72. * On older 68040 Macintoshs with 25Mhz or slower processors, such as the Centris 610, 650, and 660AV, Quadra 605,610,660AV and 700,  running system software 7.1 - 7.5.1 certian out of memory errors can be prevented by using the cache switch control panel to turn caching off. 
  73. 5.  I have a functioning printer attached to my computer but I'm unable to successfully print the Student Record screen in Math Shop Deluxe. What should I do?

  75. *  On computers with a limited amount of available RAM,  it is recommended that background printing be turned off.   Use the Chooser to turn background printing off.
  76.  
  77. 6.   On my Power Macintosh with System Software 8.0 or later and Ram Doubler installed, Math Shop Deluxe locks up during the animations.  What should I do?
  78.  
  79. * Disable Ram Doubler before launching Math Shop Deluxe.    Having Ram Doubler installed causes conflicts with the  playing of certian versions of QuickTime on  these computers.

  82. Functionality Tips
  83.  
  84. 1.     Do the skill levels correspond to grade levels?
  85.  
  86. * Level 1 - Grade 3
  87. * Level 2 - Grade 4
  88. * Level 3 - Grade 5
  89. * Level 4 - Grade 6
  90. * Level 5 - Grade 7

  92. 2.     Are there any shortcut keys.

  94. *To quit Math Shop Deluxe: Command Q 
  95. *To access Arcade Alley Controls: Command T 
  96. *To mute the sound: Command V 
  97. *To turn the sound back on: Command V
  98. *To quit an Arcade game: Esc

  100. 3.     Is there a way to mute the sound?
  101.  
  102. *Yes.  The mute shortcut key is Command V.  To turn the volume back on, just do Command V again. Mute does not turn the sound completely off, but it does lower it substantially.

  104. 4.     I did 20 problems but I didn't get a promotion or a raise? Why did this happen? For example: I did 1 full shift of 10 problems at level 2. Then I did the first 4 problems in the second shift.  I then clicked on Harder and completed the last 6 problems in shift 2 for a total of 20 completed problems.

  106. * If you change levels in the middle of a shift, while you will still get paid for problems which were answered correctly, your score for that shift will be erased.  You must complete 2 full shifts at a level to be promoted and receive a raise.  The level is changed if you click on the Harder or Easier buttons, or if you are demoted during a shift to an easier level because you answered 3 problems in a row incorrectly.

  108. Also, if you change levels in the middle of a shift, as this shift is erased, any work done at a certain level will not be reflected in the Student Record.

  110. 5.     I started a shift in a shop and when I printed out the Student Record it said I had not yet started that level.

  114. 6.     The promotion and demotion seems to be skipping levels.  
  115.  
  116. *Go into Arcade Alley Controls and make sure that the levels you need to be working on are turned on.  If for example you want to make sure that your students or children work on level one only, you must turn off all of the other levels as the promotion/demotion feature will promote/demote the player to the next level which is turned on.  If levels 1 and 5 were turned on, the student would be promoted from level 1 to level 5.

  118. 7.     I need to switch the program to another computer.  Is there a way to do it so that I don't lose all of the records?

  120. * Yes.  Before you start up Math Shop Deluxe on the new computer, go into the Scholastic's Math Shop Deluxe folder which is on the computer you have been using.   Copy this older MathShop Settings file to a floppy disk.  Install Math Shop Deluxe onto the new computer.  Insert the floppy disk containing the older Settings.msd file and copy this file Scholastic's Math Shop Deluxe folder located on the hard drive of your new computer.  Be sure to run the program and verify that your records have been successfully copied over before you uninstall Math Shop Deluxe from the old computer as the MathShop Settings file is deleted during uninstall.
